The annual sports of West Bengal Jail Sports Club were held this year from 12th - 13th February. The annual event was different this year in that this time we decided to hold the meet away from Kolkata and that too at Jalpaiguri for the first time ever. The meet was inaugurated at Town Club Stadium on 12.02.10 by Sri Jogesh Chandra Barman, Hon'ble MIC, Backward Classes Welfare Deptt in a colourful function presided over by Sri Ardhendu Sen, IAS, Addl Chief Secretary. Sri S.Ramakrishnan, IPS (Retd), OSD (Training) and Vandana Yadav, D.M., Jalpaiguri were present as special guests in the inaugural function.

In the closing ceremony on 13.02.10 Sri Biswanath Chowdhury, Hon'ble MIC, Deptt of Correctional Administration gave away the prizes. Anand Kumar, Superintendent of Police, Jalpaiguri was present as a special guest in the closing ceremony. Presidency Circle was declared as overall champion team and Julfikar Ali Molla, the sportsman of the year. The holding of the event at Jalpaiguri provided a unique opportunity to the staff of the rest of Bengal to visit North Bengal and particularly to see the functioning of Jalpaiguri Central Correctional Home.

The North Bengal Frontier of Border Security Force and District Police were extremely helpful in arranging the meet. Full credit goes to Smt Bichitra Bhattacharya, DIG (North-I) of CS and Chairperson of the Organizing Committee, Sri Bimalendu Mukhopadhyay, Superintendent, Jalpaiguri Central Correctional Home and their team for the spectacular success of the event.

The unprecedented success of the dance drama 'Valmiki Pratibha' perfoprmed by inmates of correctional homes and the impossible-to-meet demand for shows to be held in different quarters, we thought of bringing out a DVD of the dance drama. This would, we thought, help us to reach across to a wider audience and a DVD was accordingly made by Kolkata Sukriti Foundation, our long time partners.

The DVD was released by Sri Biswanath Chowdhury, Hon'ble MIC, Deptt of Correctional Administartion in our stall at Kolkata Book Fair on 30.01.10 in presence of choreographer Alokananda Roy and producer Abhijit Das Gupta. The Hon'ble MIC also released the DVD of the several international and national award winning documentary 'The Jail' by Sri Abhijit Das Gupta on this occasion.
